The Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale, in conjunction with Laeveld Agrochem and Agri Technovation, hosted the annual /13 rugby tournament on 1 and 2 March.

Eighteen schools from the Western, Southern and Eastern Cape participated in shortened matches (13m per half) with no penalty or goal kicks allowed. This allowed schools to test combinations and to measure themselves against some stiff opposition.

With the Western Cape Primary School Athletic Championships taking place at the same time some schools played without some of their speedsters at the back.

As usual, Lochnerhof and Worchester Primer have teams that will both be teams to watch in 2019. Lochnerhof has a nice combination of size and skill and teamwork amongst their pack with some skilled backs to use the ball coming their way. The Lochnerhof 10 caught the eye in all their matches.

Worchester Primer is small but tenacious up front and, as usual, have size and speed and skills amongst their backs. The highlight of the tournament was the match between these two teams and it ended 10-10, so honours even this early in the season.

Teams like Hartenbos, Overberg and Gordonsbaai will also have successful seasons, based on their play at the tournament.

And then a final word about Stellenbosch. With some additions that played WP /12 last season, they won all three their matches quite easily and will surprise a few of the big dogs in the Western Cape this season.
